The Washington International Competition, sponsored by The Friday Morning Music Club Foundation, has been held annually since 1950 for singers, pianists, and string players in turn. Substantial cash awards have been made, and in recent years the awards have also included opportunities for public performance.
The Washington International Competition seeks to support outstanding artists of the highest caliber who are creating and enhancing new performance opportunities in an effort to develop audience attendance, interest, participation and support. A departure from traditional competitions, this competition aspires to benefit the community as well as the performing artist.
Since 1976, a competition has been held every three years for the composition of a string quartet. Categories for the composition competition were expanded in 2002 to include compositions for piano quartet, piano quintet, piano trio and string trio, in addition to string quartet.
The competitions are announced through schools of music, universities, private teachers, musical organizations, and leading publications throughout the United States and other parts of the world. Applicants for performance competitions are first auditioned from CD recordings. Those accepted then come to Washington to compete before a panel of judges composed of outstanding performers, distinguished teachers, and others of recognized stature in various fields of music.
By virtue of the authority of its judges, its high musical standards, and the quality of young performers attracted, the Washington International Competition has established itself, both in the United States and abroad, as offering a significant opportunity for young artists to take a step upward from the ranks of talented students to recognition as professionals. Winners of these competitions have gone on to win other important contests and to achieve distinction in concerts, recitals, and opera.
