THE WASHINGTON INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR STRINGS (Ages 18-28)
The Washington International Competition for Strings is held every 3 years. The 2006 competition was held on May 19-21, 2006.
The next string competition will be in the Spring of 2009.
Semifinals will be: March 20 - 21, 2009, the George Washington University, Washington, DC.
Finals will be: March 22, 2009, The Terrace Theater of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC.
The deadline for application is December 29, 2008.
An online application will be available as the competition approaches.

Eligibility
- Applicants must not be under professional management.
- Applicants must be neither younger than 18 nor older than 28 as of the competition date (birth certificate will be required)
- First prize winners of this competition in past years may not apply.
Required Repertoire
All repertoire must be performed from memory except accompanied sonatas and the work in Category 5. Contestants must be prepared to perform works in their entirety. Specifics of the repertoire will be similar to 2006:
- One unaccompanied sonata, partita or suite for violin, viola (transcribed) or cello by J.S. Bach
- One sonata with piano from the classical, romantic, impressionist or contemporary period.
- One concerto or major piece with orchestra by a composer other than the ones chosen for category 1 or 2.
- One short work or movement from a longer work which shows virtuosity.
- One unaccompanied solo work by a 20th century composer
Regulations and Instructions
- Once an application has been submitted, no changes in repertoire will be permitted.
- The preliminary jury will review the CDs to select the semifinalists. All applicants will be notified in mid February.
- Semifinalists selected after the CD auditions will compete in Washington, DC on March 20 and 21, 2009 at George Washington University.
- Applicants should be prepared to play all repertoire upon request for the semifinal round.
- Finalists selected after the semifinal round will compete on March 22, 2009 in the Terrace Theater of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
General Information
- An online application will be available in the Fall of 2008. Hand written applications are not accepted.
- All forms and CD should be sent in one package postmarked no later than December 29, 2008. Mail arriving after January 2, 2009 will not be accepted. NOTE: Overseas mail may take up to two weeks.
