Founded in 1886, the Friday Morning Music Club began with informal recitals in the homes of its members. Its object was to promote musical culture among its members and the community. Today, with more than 800 members, the concerts are held weekly from October through May in the Great Hall of the Sumner School Museum and monthly at many other locations in the surrounding area.

Between then and now, the Club's interaction with the cultural life of the nation's capital has been consistent and profound. The Club's members have contributed to the development of every significant cultural institution and participated in the establishment and growth of the area's musical activites across a wide spectrum.

The Club is supported by annual dues and special gifts of its members and by bequests to its Endowment Fund. Contributions to the Friday Morning Music Club are tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Friday Morning Music Club is a member of the United Arts Organization.
